Why colour-blindness is a true ailment
By Eric Girold
Colour-blindness is often considered as a mere impediment, at worst something that some people make fun of. Of course, it is always funny to see someone with socks of two different colours or a tie that does not much the shirt. At all. But when you suffer from the worst kind of colour-blindess, that is when you cannot discern a purple text written on a green or red background, there is no fun left in the situation. Let me tell you about it, because it has been plaguing me all my life. At school, teachers thought I was a little retarded because I could not put the right amounts of coloured sticks at the required place. Of course, they did not have any difference between them in my mind. Later on, I tried to get a job in electronics, but as I could not see what the difference was between the different components, I was politely advised that I should choose other kinds of studies. So I ended up studying languages and literature, which is far from being in the same field. My other troubles with this dreaded illness was when I had to do my military service. I was sent to serve in the Navy, and that was fine, because that was what I wanted. Unfortunately, as I was to serve as a steering pilot, as such my training was, the officers decided that I could not ever be let to do that, because of some flags to be displayed in times of quarantine or stuff like that, and these were of course coloured. Well, I discovered the dubious pleasures of waiting at the officers' mess and helping the cook in his business. What a promotion, isn't it ? Genetics are the last hope that future people like me would be able to cling on. As this is a genetically-transmitted ailment, perhaps in a few years' time, babies will be born with "normal" vision. And won't have to suffer from eviction from a lot of jobs and trades like me. |
